Validity of Dreams

by Jessica Akinyi

Are dreams valid? This is one of the lingering question that pops into my head every time I hear of a femicide case. Envisioning how someone's future plans are put to an end in the blink of an eye is a painful ordeal. Meron's story is one among many where we are reminded that "no matter where you are from, your dreams are valid"-Lupita Nyong'o

I am glad that in the fight against femicide and gender inequality, there are special days within the calendar year that have been set aside worldwide to honour girls and women. These days bring peace and unity thus reminding us that we all deserve to be appreciated and loved.

At the beginning of every year on the 8th of March, International Women's Day is celebrated, the day highlights the need for awareness of rights for women including gender equality as the existence of women brings equilibrium to the society. This is followed by 12th May, Mother's Day which celebrates mothers as nurturers and their invaluable contribution to society. 14th November is the International Day of the Girl Child where the well-being of girls is emphasized. Then the year ends with 25th November which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and is key in addressing that there is No Excuse for violence against women.

So yes, dreams are valid and that is why such movements have been rolled out to ensure that girls and women reach their full potential in the society.
