On 13th March 2024, the trending news that was heavily debated on social media was the death penalty ruling in Monica Kimani's case. Jowie Irungu, who was convicted of the murder was sentenced to death.
I am not one to judge but the case falls into the category of femicide and shows the extent to which the decisions we make could lead to a positive or negative outcome. During the sentencing, the judge, Ms. Nzioka mentioned the case as the most gruesome murder she has witnessed recently revealing chilling details of the murder as having been committed professionally by the perpetrator. The case has taken over 5 years for the family of Monica Kimani to get justice.
I can imagine the psychological trauma that both families have gone through and one that will remain embedded in their hearts for the rest of their lives. Blood is undoubtedly thicker than water! This shows the effect of femicide is a cycle that goes beyond the victim’s family. My heart goes to Monica Kimani’s brother who was the first responder on the scene and had to face the situation head-on.

Monica’s case has now become a number in the femicide statistics. It is upon our society to stop questioning the jury’s decision regarding the death sentence and become active in advocating for an environment where everyone can live in peace and harmony regardless of gender differences.
